Chettinad is one of the most surreal and historically fascinating regions in India. Located a two-hour drive from Madurai, this cluster of 73 villages was the home of the Nattukottai Chettiars, an elite, incredibly wealthy banking and merchant community who made their fortunes trading across Southeast Asia during the British Empire.

The Mansions of Karaikudi and Kanadukathan

To showcase their wealth, the Chettiars built monumental, palatial mansions in their ancestral villages. We are not talking about large houses; we are talking about 40,000-square-foot properties with 60 to 100 rooms, massive inner courtyards, and pillars made of solid Burmese teak.

They imported the best materials from around the globe: Italian marble floors, Belgian glass, Japanese ceramic tiles, and Victorian cast iron. However, following the Great Depression and World War II, the Chettiars' trading empire collapsed. They migrated to modern cities, leaving these massive mansions behind.

Today, walking through villages like Kanadukathan feels like walking through a wealthy ghost town. Hundreds of these mansions sit quietly deteriorating. A few have been painstakingly restored and converted into stunning boutique heritage hotels (like the Chidambara Vilas or the Bangala). Staying in one is an experience that will allow you to delve into the history and culture of the region. The Culinary Legacy: Chettinad Cuisine

While the architectural wealth faded, the culinary wealth of the Chettiars took over the world. Chettinad cuisine is legendary in India. It is characterized by the generous use of complex, freshly ground spicesβ€”star anise, stone flower (kalpasi), tamarind, and fiery Guntur chilies.

Because the Chettiars traveled extensively, they incorporated foreign elements into traditional South Indian cooking. The must-try dishes include Chettinad Chicken Pepper Roast, deeply spiced Mutton Chukka, and the delicate, lacy Appams (rice pancakes) served with rich coconut milk stews. To eat an authentic Chettinad meal served on a fresh banana leaf in the courtyard of a 100-year-old mansion is one of India's greatest culinary experiences. The Athangudi Tiles

Visit the village of Athangudi to witness the making of the famous local tiles. Unlike factory-made ceramics, Athangudi tiles are made entirely by hand using local sand, cement, and vivid synthetic oxides. The artisans pour the liquid colors into glass stencils to create incredibly complex geometric and floral patterns. The tiles are then cured in water for weeks. You can walk into the small village workshops and watch the artisans create these tiles exactly as they did a century ago.

Chettinad is dry, hot, and dusty. The best time to visit is during the brief South Indian winter from December to February. Hire a car and a local guide who can negotiate access into some of the privately-owned, locked mansions that are not officially open to the public.
