According to the Mahabharata, after the Kurukshetra war, the Pandavas sought out Lord Shiva to absolve themselves of the sin of killing their kin. Shiva, not wanting to forgive them so easily, took the form of a bull and hid in the Garhwal Himalayas. When Bhima spotted him, the bull dove into the earth. The body parts of the bull reappeared at five different locations. Today, these are the Panch Kedar.

The Five Shrines (In traditional order of visitation)

1. Kedarnath (3,583m) - The Hump

The most famous and crowded of the five. Reached via a 16km trek from Gaurikund. It requires immense stamina but has the best infrastructure (ponies, helicopters, food stalls). For a smoother journey, consider planning your route in advance and booking necessary services.

2. Tungnath (3,680m) - The Arms

This is the highest Shiva temple in the world. The trek begins from Chopta and is relatively short (about 4-5 km), but it is incredibly steep. The paved path winds through alpine meadows (bugyals). A further 1.5 km hike takes you to Chandrashila peak, offering a 360-degree view of Nanda Devi, Trishul, and Chaukhamba. For treks like these, understanding how to flight-economy">survive long hauls can be beneficial.

3. Rudranath (2,286m) - The Face

This is widely considered the toughest trek of the five. Beginning from Sagar village near Gopeshwar, it's a brutal 20-22 km ascent through dense forests and bugyals. The temple is a natural rock cave where Shiva's face is worshipped. You will walk for hours without seeing another human soul. Only experienced trekkers should attempt this without a guide. It's crucial to know how to cabs">avoid overpaying for services like guides and accommodations.

4. Madhyamaheshwar (3,490m) - The Belly

A beautiful, moderate-to-difficult 16 km trek starting from Ransi village. The trail runs alongside the Madhyamaheshwar Ganga river, passing through lush forests and traditional Himalayan villages. The temple sits in a spectacular green meadow with the Chaukhamba peaks looming directly behind it. Planning your itinerary carefully can help you make the most of your trip.

5. Kalpeshwar (2,200m) - The Hair

The easiest of the five, and the only one accessible throughout the year (the others close in winter due to snow). Located in the beautiful Urgam valley, you can now drive almost all the way to the temple, requiring only a short 1-2 km walk. The temple is a small cave where Shiva's matted locks (Jata) appeared. For solo travelers, especially solo female travelers, it's essential to research and plan meticulously.
